Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on Earth. It stands 13,680 feet above sea level, its submarine flanks descend to the seafloor 16,400 ft below, and the seafloor in turn is depressed by Mauna Loa's great mass another 26,200 ft. This makes the volcano's summit about 56,200 ft above its base! Mauna Loa covers half of the Island of Hawai‘i. The Hawaiian name "Mauna Loa" means "Long Mountain." Mauna Loa has erupted 34 times since 1843 producing large, voluminous flows of basalt.
