Gundam: The ranking system is based off points that are earned by fighting other tanks. The higher the enemy rank, the more points you gain by shooting them. Only the developers can see the point totals. Once you collect more points than the player ahead of you, your number drops.
As for the other awards; SW said basically to just wait on that because he's too busy. You submit garbage and SW gives you specials out of friendship or pity. Rarely has a special truly been deserved in tankpit.

To become #1 you must have hundreds of hours on one tank. Hours spent shooting as many dual shots as you can, as fast as you can. I am near 500 hours and will soon make a comeback to raise the bar even higher. Here is a tip. When you're in the map, do not waste time sitting around. Find someone to fight. The more you fight, the faster you rise up the Top 25 list.
Also, it doesn't matter what rank you're fighting at, whether it be lieutenant or general, the points you earn from shooting are the same. So, don't be afraid to die in a raid. You won't lose the points you've earned, you'll only lose your current rank which is no big deal.
