To rank past Sergeant you need to fill your experience bar and kill a corporal. You must kill a rank below you or higher to go beyond Sergeant.

You get experience as a sergeant as you would with any other rank; by shooting other tanks. However it will take longer than recruit, private or corporal since sergeant is a higher rank than those three. Also don't forget to deactivate a tank that is corporal or higher for your promotion to lieutenant. Cheers :)
